I wanted to take a minute and introduce myself to those of you whom I have not yet met. I am Erin Whitton and am a "hockey mom". I have no previous experience in playing or coaching, but I was introduced to the sport in 1992 when I met my husband Mike in college. He turned me into a fan as I have spent many years in many cities watching him play. Once our daughter Sydni was old enough (3 months) she has had a hockey stick in her hand and has been "strongly" encouraged to be a Toronto Maple Leaf fan. Sydni began IP when she was 5yrs., then played a year of Mini-Mite and a year of Mite hockey. She then decided that she would really like to play on a all girls team, and that's what lead me to you.

Thank you for the incredible welcome to the GTAHA family. As I walked into your board meeting, I had butterflies in my stomach which quickly pasted from your warm welcome. Girls hockey is going to be HUGE and it's going to begin a GTAHA. How exciting!

Let me share with you our goals for the Toledo Cherokee Girls Hockey Team 2006-2007 inaugural season. To begin we will host two open hockey clinics in the spring possibly two more in August. Then in September we would like to begin practicing 3-4 times per month, attend three to four tournaments and possibly scrimmage a couple of games. We will need evaluate the ages of the girls who want to play to determine the age brackets that we will play in. Mike Whitton will be the head coaches, along with a couple of assistants.

A lot has happened in a few short days. We have scheduled two open clinics for the spring; the dates are: Thursday, May 11th 6:00-7:30pm and Saturday, June 3rd 2:00-3:30pm. Poole's Printing has generously offered to print us flyers and posters for advertising these upcoming clinics and team for next year at cost! Our first sponsor. We have also began contacting future players and the support from their parents has been tremendous. Fred Workman, who has a daughter who will be playing with us next year is in the process of contacting GM Powertrain for a sponsorship ~ thanks to Mike Mankowski for making the initial contact. Fred has done a significant amount of background work on tournaments, sponsorships and promotions. He will be a terrific asset to GTAHA.

Our advertising will focus on the schools. We will either have a flyer that will be sent home with all girls from K-8 in Toledo and the surrounding areas or a poster will be placed in the school or administrative buildings (depending on regulations). We will also send out press releases to all local TV, radio stations and newspapers. We hope this might generate a possible story. Flyers and possible posters will also be send to area ice rinks.

Thank you to ALL of your help and support.

Here is what girls hockey needs from YOU:
~Ideas on places to advertise
~Help with equipment and the loaning of equipment for clinics
~Donations of old equipment and skates
~Any companies or hockey loving families that might want to sponsor
~Talk up the program to anyone and everyone

Thanks in advance to all your help.
